Cancelling a casino bonus can remove promotional credit and associated bonus winnings, but it is not the same as losing your remaining deposit balance. Before selecting Cancel or Forfeit, establish which funds are cash, which are promotional, and exactly what the confirmation screen says will be removed.
This guide is for adults using operators licensed by the Gambling Commission for Great Britain. It explains how to check a cancellation, what to ask support and how to compare the balance before and afterwards. The examples are fictional; they are not descriptions of a particular casino’s offer or a recommendation to keep gambling.
Can you cancel a casino bonus and withdraw?
The Competition and Markets Authority’s guidance on online gambling promotions says customers should be able to leave a promotion with their remaining deposit and winnings from play with that deposit. That does not make unfinished promotional credit withdrawable cash.
Separately, the Gambling Commission’s withdrawal guidance says access to the deposit balance must be available even with a pending or active bonus, subject to general regulatory obligations. It also requires deposit and bonus balances to be clearly distinguished. Bonus wagering is not a reason to require further play before withdrawing the deposit balance.
The practical question is therefore not simply “Can I withdraw?” Ask: “Which balance am I withdrawing, and what happens to the promotion when I do?” A legitimate identity or payment check is a separate issue from completing bonus wagering.
Identify the balance before touching the cancel button
Open the account or cashier view rather than relying only on the amount shown inside a game. Record every relevant balance label. A large headline figure can be less useful than the breakdown underneath it.
| Account item | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit or cash balance | How much remains from my own funds and their returns? | This is different from unfinished promotional credit. |
| Bonus balance | What amount would cancellation remove? | The forfeiture may include more than the original bonus. |
| Bonus-derived winnings | Have these converted to cash or are conditions outstanding? | The label “winnings” alone does not answer this. |
| Unused promotional spins | Will these disappear with the offer? | Spins and wallet credit may have separate entries. |
| Pending rounds or transfers | Is anything still settling? | A moving balance makes comparison difficult. |
If the account does not make these distinctions clear, stop and ask for a written breakdown. Do not try to discover the answer by placing another wager. That changes the record you are trying to understand.
Worked example: cancelling an unused promotion
Imagine a fictional account containing £40 in deposit funds and a separate £20 promotional balance. Nothing has been wagered. The cancellation screen says the entire £20 promotion will be forfeited.
Under those stated assumptions, removing the promotion leaves £40 in the cash balance. It does not turn the £20 bonus into cash, and it does not create a £60 withdrawal. The £20 was conditional promotional credit, not an additional £20 deposited by the customer.
Now change the example: some play has occurred, leaving £25 cash and £35 in a bonus wallet. If the terms validly provide for the entire unfinished bonus wallet to be forfeited, cancellation would remove £35, not merely the £20 originally awarded. The illustrative remaining cash is £25.
These examples depend on an accurate wallet breakdown. You cannot safely calculate the result by subtracting the original offer value from a combined headline balance. Nor does cancelling restore cash that has already been lost through gambling.
A checklist before confirming forfeiture
- Stop play. Allow any active round to finish or ask support about its status.
- Save the offer terms. Keep the name, relevant cancellation clause and date.
- Record the balance breakdown. Note cash, promotional funds and any outstanding entries.
- Read the confirmation message. Look for a specific amount and whether bonus winnings or unused spins are included.
- Ask about withdrawal effects. Establish whether requesting a withdrawal itself cancels the promotion.
- Confirm only when the consequence is clear. Save the final acknowledgement and recheck the ledger.
A button labelled “Remove bonus” is not a complete explanation of the financial result. If the next screen shows a forfeiture amount you did not expect, do not approve it simply to reach the cashier. Screenshot the message and ask support to explain the difference.
There is no universal menu path. Depending on the site, the controls may be in Bonuses, Rewards, Promotions or the cashier, or cancellation may require support. This guide does not claim to have tested those controls at every operator.
What happens to unused free spins?
Check whether the spins are a standalone promotion, one stage of a larger offer or an entitlement already attached to a game. The cancellation terms may distinguish unused spins from credit generated by spins already played.
For example, an invented offer might show ten unused promotional spins and £3 in bonus winnings. Removing the spins does not, by itself, tell you whether the £3 remains, disappears or has already converted. Ask about both entries rather than assuming they share one treatment.
Also distinguish promotional free spins awarded by an operator from an in-game feature triggered during a round. If a game feature is unfinished, the issue may be round settlement rather than cancellation of an account promotion. Give support the round reference and the offer name so it can investigate the correct record.
Do not rush to use spins merely because you intend to cancel. Using them changes the account state and may introduce further conditions or losses. It is reasonable to decline an offer you do not want.
Does requesting a withdrawal cancel the bonus?
That depends on the promotion’s terms and the account’s cancellation process. Some terms may describe forfeiture on withdrawal; another account may require a separate confirmation. Read the actual warning presented to you instead of assuming the withdrawal button has no effect on the offer.
A pending payout and an active promotion are different records. After requesting money, check both: the withdrawal status and the bonus status. A promotional balance disappearing is not proof that the money has reached your bank.
If the account says you must wager more before accessing funds identified as your deposit balance, ask the operator to explain that restriction against the official guidance linked above. Do not accept a generic “bonus active” response as a full explanation of which funds are restricted.
For a small remaining cash amount, see our guide to minimum withdrawals and recovering a small balance. Depositing extra money solely to make a withdrawal button available can complicate the situation.
Does being nearly finished change the decision?
A progress bar describes a condition; it is not money already secured. Being 90% through a wagering requirement does not guarantee that the remaining play will be affordable, successful or completed before expiry.
Suppose a fictional promotion requires £100 in qualifying wagering and the record shows £90 completed. The remaining qualifying amount is £10. That figure is turnover, not a promised £10 cost or a guaranteed maximum loss. Game contribution rules can also mean the amount actually staked differs from the amount credited towards a requirement.
Use our wagering calculator only to understand the stated arithmetic. It cannot predict returns or decide whether continuing is worthwhile. Money and time already spent do not create an obligation to finish the promotion.
If keeping a bonus would require spending beyond a limit you set, chasing losses or playing when you want to stop, cancellation or simply stopping play may be the more appropriate choice. Do not treat the countdown or progress percentage as an instruction.
What to ask customer support
A useful support request separates the information you need from permission to act. You can ask for clarification without authorising an immediate forfeiture.
I am considering cancelling [offer name]. Before you make any change, please confirm my current deposit/cash balance, bonus balance and any bonus-derived winnings. Please identify the exact amount that would be forfeited, whether unused spins would be removed, and the amount that would remain available for withdrawal subject to normal checks.
Please also confirm whether requesting a withdrawal automatically cancels this offer and provide the relevant terms. This is a request for information only; please do not cancel the bonus until I confirm.
Keep the reply and any case number. If support only repeats the headline offer terms, ask it to apply them to the actual figures in your account. The most useful answer gives an amount before cancellation and an expected amount afterwards.
What to check after cancellation
Reopen the account balance and transaction history. Confirm that the named promotion is cancelled, record the amount removed and compare the remaining cash with the explanation you received. Check the timestamp so you do not confuse an earlier game settlement with the cancellation.
If the figures differ, stop further play and report the specific difference. For example: “Support confirmed £25 cash would remain, but the cash balance now shows £15; please explain the £10 adjustment.” This is easier to investigate than a general statement that the account is wrong.
Our account-history guide explains how deposits, withdrawals, stakes, returns and adjustments fit together. Do not count a forfeited promotional balance as a new cash deposit or assume it changes the amount you paid in from your bank.
Where an explanation remains unresolved, use the operator’s formal complaints process and keep the written response. See our casino complaints and ADR guide for the escalation route. A screenshot of the cancellation warning and the support conversation can be more helpful than reconstructing events from memory.
Common questions
Can I decline a bonus before depositing?
Check the offer selection and any automatic opt-in setting before confirming a payment. If the interface does not make the choice clear, ask support how to deposit without accepting the promotion. Do not assume a promotional code is the only way a bonus can be activated.
Will cancelling restore my original deposit?
No. Cancellation is not a refund of gambling losses. The relevant cash amount is what remains, not necessarily what you originally deposited.
Can I undo a bonus cancellation?
Do not assume it is reversible. Ask before confirming. If it was accidental, contact support promptly and avoid further account activity while it checks whether any restoration is possible.
Does cancellation close my casino account?
Not ordinarily: promotion status and account status are separate. If you want to stop using the site, follow its account-closure or safer-gambling process rather than relying on bonus cancellation.
