UK casino bonus rules changed materially on 19 January 2026. Gambling businesses licensed in Great Britain may no longer apply a wagering requirement above 10 times the bonus funds, and a single incentive cannot require participation in more than one gambling product. The reform makes promotions simpler, but it does not turn bonus play into risk-free money.

At a glance

The limit is 10x the bonus funds, not a guarantee of value. A licensed operator must also keep each incentive within one product category—for example, casino only rather than a combined sportsbook-and-casino task.

What changed under the UK casino bonus rules in 2026?

The Gambling Commission revised Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1, the section of its Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice that governs rewards and bonuses. From 19 January 2026, licensees must not set a wagering requirement above ten times the bonus funds. They must also avoid incentives that combine different gambling products such as betting, casino, bingo or lottery.

These are not voluntary recommendations. Social responsibility codes are conditions of an operator’s licence. The Commission can examine compliance when supervising a licensee and can take regulatory action where conditions are breached. Readers can verify the current wording in the Gambling Commission’s rewards and bonuses code.

The change followed concern that very high playthrough multipliers could encourage customers to gamble for longer or faster than usual. Before the cap, a £10 bonus carrying a 50x requirement could demand £500 of qualifying wagers before associated winnings became withdrawable. Under the new maximum, a £10 bonus can require no more than £100 of qualifying wagering.

The headline is therefore simple: a UKGC-licensed operator cannot advertise a casino bonus with a 20x, 35x or 50x wagering requirement on the bonus funds for Great Britain. If a promotion displayed today appears to exceed 10x, first confirm that you are viewing the current Great Britain terms, not an old cached page or terms written for another country.

How does the 10x wagering limit work?

A wagering requirement is the amount of qualifying play required before bonus-related funds become withdrawable. With a 10x requirement applied to a £20 bonus, the maximum required turnover is £200. With a £50 bonus, it is £500. An operator may offer a lower multiplier—or no wagering requirement—but cannot exceed the regulatory maximum.

Examples of the 10x maximum
Bonus fundsMaximum multiplierMaximum qualifying wagers
£510x£50
£1010x£100
£2010x£200
£5010x£500
£10010x£1,000

The basic calculation is:

Bonus funds × wagering multiplier = required qualifying play

The calculation does not tell you what the play will cost. Every game has a house edge, and short-term outcomes can vary sharply. A £200 playthrough is not the same as paying £200, because the same balance may be wagered repeatedly, but some or all of the balance can still be lost before the requirement is completed.

Game contribution matters too. If an offer says a game contributes less than 100%, each £1 staked may count as less than £1 toward the requirement. The regulatory cap controls the multiplier, while the promotion’s accessible terms explain qualifying games and contribution. Our separate wagering-requirements guide explains that mechanic in more detail.

What does the mixed-product promotion ban mean?

A single reward can no longer make customers complete activity across different gambling products. For example, an incentive should not require a sports bet and then a number of slot spins to unlock the same benefit. Casino, betting, bingo and lottery are treated as separate product types for this rule.

The purpose is both clarity and harm reduction. A customer evaluating a casino incentive should be able to understand it as a casino offer, rather than being pushed into an additional form of gambling that they did not initially intend to use. The Commission’s announcement about safer and simpler promotions explains the reasoning behind the restriction.

This does not mean an operator cannot run separate sportsbook and casino promotions. It means one incentive must not bundle more than one gambling product. Always open the full terms rather than assuming that two promotions shown on the same homepage are necessarily one combined offer.

Seven bonus terms that still matter after the 10x cap

The new rules remove one source of excessive complexity, but the multiplier is only one part of a promotion. A professional comparison should examine the complete route from eligibility to withdrawal.

1. Eligibility

Check the minimum age, Great Britain residency requirement, new-customer status and any linked-brand exclusions. A person who previously held an account with another brand in the same group may not qualify. Identity and age verification can also be required before an incentive is credited or winnings are withdrawn.

2. Qualifying deposit or spend

“Deposit £10” and “deposit and wager £10” describe different commitments. An advertised benefit must state significant conditions clearly. The ASA’s guidance says eligibility restrictions, deposit or wagering requirements and time limits are among the conditions that may need to appear prominently, not only deep in the full terms.

3. Payment-method exclusions

Some payment types may not qualify for a promotion. This can be a significant condition because it changes whether a customer receives the advertised benefit. Confirm the accepted method before making a deposit and keep a copy of the terms that applied at the time.

4. Game eligibility and contribution

A casino incentive may apply only to selected games. Some games can be excluded; others may contribute at a reduced percentage. Playing an excluded game may not advance the requirement and could breach the promotion rules. Do not rely on a generic assumption that all slots count equally.

5. Maximum permitted stake

An offer may set a maximum stake while bonus funds are active. The operator should make important restrictions clear and, where possible, enforce them through the interface. Read the figure before beginning; exceeding it can affect bonus eligibility or winnings.

6. Expiry

Look for separate deadlines for opting in, depositing, using free spins and completing wagering. A shorter window can materially change the practical commitment. Never increase spending or speed of play simply to beat a deadline.

7. Withdrawal and bonus cancellation

Check what happens if you cancel a bonus or request a withdrawal before completing its terms. Consumer-law guidance says customers should be allowed to leave a promotion with their remaining deposit and winnings earned from play with their deposit. Bonus funds and bonus-derived winnings may be treated differently.

Worked examples: comparing offers without headline bias

Consider two fictional promotions. Offer A gives £20 in bonus funds with a 10x requirement, so the qualifying play is £200. Offer B gives £10 with no wagering requirement. Offer A has the larger headline value, but it asks for more play and exposes the balance to repeated game risk. Offer B is smaller but mechanically simpler.

Now consider free spins. The number of spins alone is not enough to compare value. Fifty spins worth 10p each have a notional stake value of £5. Ten spins worth £1 each have a notional value of £10. Whether the resulting winnings are cash, bonus funds or capped winnings can matter more than the spin count.

A useful comparison therefore records: the actual bonus value, the stake per spin, the wagering multiplier, qualifying games, any withdrawal cap, the expiry period and the cash commitment. Our 12-point bonus-terms checklist provides a reusable way to review those items.

Editorial principle

Never describe an offer as “free” when customers must risk their own money to obtain it. Avoid treating the largest headline number as the best offer. Clear terms matter more than promotional language.

What to do if terms appear unclear or unfair

Save the advert, full terms and account messages. Contact the operator with a precise question and keep its response. If a dispute remains, follow the operator’s formal complaints procedure and then use its nominated alternative dispute resolution provider where appropriate. The Casino UK Blog complaints guide explains the evidence and stages.

The Competition and Markets Authority’s online gambling promotions guidance says terms should be clear and fair, customers should be able to distinguish cash from bonus funds, and firms should not place unfair restrictions on customers’ own deposits.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum wagering requirement in the UK in 2026?

For operators licensed by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain, the maximum is 10 times the bonus funds. Lower multipliers and no-wagering offers are allowed.

When did the rule start?

The revised rewards and bonuses provisions came into force on 19 January 2026. Earlier announcements mentioned a December 2025 date, but the Commission later changed implementation to January.

Does 10x mean the bonus is good value?

Not necessarily. The cap reduces required play compared with older high multipliers, but games still have a house edge. Eligibility, stake limits, game contribution, expiry and withdrawal treatment also matter.

Can an incentive combine betting and casino play?

No single incentive from a Great Britain licensee should include more than one product type. Separate promotions can exist, but one benefit must not require mixed-product participation.
