From 30 September 2026, gambling businesses regulated in Great Britain must offer a clearly defined gross deposit limit at account level. The change does not impose one universal deposit cap. It strengthens how customers can set their own limits and how operators must describe and enforce them.
These Gambling Commission standards apply in Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has a separate regulatory framework. This article is general information, not legal or financial advice.
UK casino deposit-limit rules 2026: the quick answer
The updated Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards take effect on 30 September 2026. Online gambling systems must offer gross deposit limits as a minimum. A gross deposit limit measures the full amount deposited during a selected period without deducting withdrawals.
Operators must offer periods that include 24 hours, seven days and one month. If a customer sets more than one time period, the most restrictive combination must apply. Once the limit is reached, further deposits must be blocked until the period restarts or an increase completes the required cooling-off process.
The rule is about the design and clarity of limit-setting tools. It does not set the same maximum deposit amount for every person.
What changes on 30 September 2026?
The Gambling Commission is updating section 12 of its Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards. This section governs the financial-limit tools that licensed remote gambling systems provide to customers.
The main changes require operators to:
- offer gross deposit limits as a minimum at account level;
- use the term “deposit limit” only for a limit that meets the gross-deposit definition;
- give gross deposit limits at least equal prominence when other limit types are offered;
- stop further deposits after a customer reaches the selected limit;
- apply the most restrictive result when multiple time periods overlap; and
- describe stake, loss and net deposit limits more clearly.
The implementation date was previously expected to be 30 June 2026. The Commission moved it to 30 September 2026, giving operators additional time to implement the revised wording and system requirements.
What is a gross deposit limit?
A gross deposit limit restricts the total value of money paid into an account during a particular period. Withdrawals do not reduce the amount counted toward that limit.
For example, imagine a customer sets a £100 weekly gross deposit limit. They deposit £60, later withdraw £40 and then attempt to deposit another £50 during the same week. The withdrawal does not reset the calculation. The first £60 still counts, so only another £40 may be deposited before the £100 gross limit is reached.
This distinction matters because a net deposit limit works differently. A net limit may subtract withdrawals from deposits. From September, an operator cannot present a net calculation as though it were the required gross “deposit limit”. The labels need to reflect what the tool actually measures.
Daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits
The available fixed periods must include 24 hours, seven days and one month. Operators may offer additional periods, but these three options must be available for gross deposit limits.
Customers can set limits across more than one period. Where limits overlap, the system must enforce the most restrictive outcome. The Gambling Commission gives the example of a £10 daily limit combined with a £100 weekly limit. The customer could deposit no more than £10 in one day and no more than £70 across seven days, because seven daily caps of £10 are stricter than the £100 weekly figure.
Before choosing an amount, look at essential spending, existing commitments and disposable income. A limit should be a ceiling, not a target. Our guide to setting a gambling budget explains a practical way to choose boundaries before gambling.
What happens when a deposit limit is reached?
The gambling system must prevent further deposits once the limit has been reached. That block remains until the defined period restarts or the customer completes the process for increasing the limit.
A correctly functioning limit should not be bypassed simply by moving from one product to another within the same account. The minimum requirement is an account-level limit. If an operator also provides product-specific limits, it should explain clearly whether a setting covers the full account or only one game, product or channel.
Keep your own payment records rather than relying only on the balance displayed by a gambling account. Our casino deposits and withdrawals guide explains what transaction details to check and save.
Can you increase or reduce a casino deposit limit?
A customer-led increase cannot take effect immediately. It must be requested by the customer, followed by a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours, and then positively confirmed after that period ends. The extra confirmation matters: an increase should not activate automatically merely because the waiting period has passed.
A request to reduce a limit should normally be implemented immediately. If a technical failure prevents an immediate reduction, the operator should tell the customer when it will take effect.
This difference is intentional. A lower limit adds protection straight away, while a higher limit introduces delay so the decision can be reconsidered.
Gross deposit limits, net deposit limits, loss limits and stake limits
Operators may provide several types of financial controls. Understanding the calculation is more useful than relying on the label alone.
- Gross deposit limit: the total amount deposited during the selected period, without subtracting withdrawals.
- Net deposit limit: deposits minus withdrawals during the applicable period.
- Loss limit: the value staked minus winnings or returns from those stakes during the applicable period.
- Stake limit: a cap on the value staked over a period or on specified products.
A gross deposit limit must be offered as a minimum and must receive at least equal prominence where several types are available. Before accepting any account setting, read exactly what is counted, which products it covers and when the period resets. The same habit is useful when reviewing broader online casino account terms.
Deposit limits are not the same as online slot stake limits
The September deposit-limit changes are separate from the maximum stake rules for online slots. In Great Britain, the maximum stake per online-slot game cycle is £5 for adults aged 25 and over and £2 for adults aged 18 to 24.
Those statutory amounts apply to individual online-slot game cycles. A customer-selected deposit limit controls how much money can be added to the account during a chosen period. One does not replace the other.
The online-slot caps also do not apply in the same way to roulette, blackjack or other non-slot casino games. For an overview of game cycles, reels and random outcomes, see how online slots work.
Deposit-limit checklist for UK customers
- Confirm the setting is a gross deposit limit
- Choose a limit before depositing
- Check whether it covers the entire account
- Understand when each period restarts
- Remember that withdrawals do not reduce a gross limit
- Treat the selected amount as a ceiling, not a goal
- Reduce the limit if gambling feels harder to control
- Use time-out or self-exclusion when a limit is not enough
Frequently asked questions
When do the new UK casino deposit-limit rules begin?
The updated requirements take effect on 30 September 2026 for Gambling Commission-regulated operators in Great Britain.
Is the government setting one maximum casino deposit?
No. There is no single universal amount in these rules. Operators must provide the facility, while customers choose their own gross deposit limit. Operators may have additional controls arising from their regulatory responsibilities.
Do withdrawals reset a gross deposit limit?
No. A gross limit counts the total deposited during the period without deducting withdrawals.
Can I set both daily and weekly limits?
Yes. When simultaneous periods are selected, the system must apply the most restrictive combination.
Can an increase take effect immediately?
No. A customer-led increase requires a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours and positive confirmation after the waiting period.
What if I need to stop gambling completely?
A deposit limit may not be enough when gambling is causing harm. Consider a time-out, GAMSTOP self-exclusion, a bank gambling block and confidential support. Visit our responsible-gambling resources or BeGambleAware.org.
The bottom line
The 30 September 2026 rules are mainly about clarity and reliable implementation. A deposit limit must mean a gross deposit limit, it must be clearly available, and the system must stop further deposits when that limit is reached. Customers should still choose conservative amounts, review transaction history and step away if gambling stops feeling manageable.
